The 20th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq kind of snuck up on me. America’s been outraging the world and embarrassing itself so energetically lately that I plumb forgot it had been that long since our last major foreign policy fiasco.
Not sure anything else since Vietnam comes close — Afghanistan, sure, but it was part of the same insanity, though I remember the moderate types were warm for it because unlike Iraq we had reasons for Afghanistan, which petty much boiled down to The Taliban Is Bad. (And they were and they are! But think about how bad you have to have fucked up to occupy a country for 20 years and the second you leave the Taliban basically just walk back into power.) (Yeah, I know, the French etc. but that’s like modern vs. dead ball eras of imperialism — you can’t really compare them.)
