John Cazale's 'I'm smart!' is one of the greatest movie moments, in my book─the way he makes us see that even Fredo doesn't believe it, but he _must_ say it, and the fact that he protests, completely impotent and useless though it is, gets the smallest but non-zero acknowledgement from Michael….

Someone who sounded reasonable mentioned that Eric is, in fact, the somewhat competent one. The first son's trouble might be a family tradition, considering (amorally) the relative successes of Fred Jr and Donald. ('Amorally', as Fred Jr seems only to have really hurt himself.) See also the relative intelligence of at least one daughter.

According to one DVD commenter or another, I think Coppola but I'm not sure, the original version of the "Godfather" theme (the 'Love Theme' that has [terrible,terrible] lyrics, not the much better main theme) was written by Rota for some Italian circus movie and was, in fact, peppy.
