Well, it’s nuts. And of course that’s not necessarily a bad thing in a movie. Many of my favorite Ken Russell movies are nuts. Ditto Oliver Stone (of whose stylistic excesses the movie reminded me — along with Coppola’s own Dracula). So’s Skiddoo. I could go on.
But the thing about movies that are nuts is, they’re usually great for the running time of the film, but it’s rare that they stick with you afterward, except in the slightly sickly way that amusing embarrassments you’ve witnessed often do. Only a few crazy movies are inspired-crazy, like WR: Mysteries of the Organism, among the movies I cherish. Megalopolis ain’t that.
