Does humanity advance? Hope so.

We all notice, I guess, that our politics have degenerated over the years, but I think it’s an open question as to how far they had to degenerate. It’s clear that, as discussed by candidates and columnists (let alone the goons and gadflies of the internet), we currently have fewer useful discussions of policy than we have culture war screamfests.
