Substack says I should tell you to join me on Notes but I'm not sure why
I guess? I mean, couldn't hurt.
I published a note on Substack Notes:
I had a free moment and I figured: Twitter’s shit, might as well try this.
Substack put some boilerplate in this template for me to pitch Notes to you with, and I’m happy to pass that on but let me say this first:
Substack is pretty cool and I assume Notes is, too. On the other hand, I see a ton of “next Twitter” things every week and there is no way of knowing which or any of these will catch fire sufficiently to create the critical mass necessary for a successful social network.
The new thing now I guess is Bluesky which I can’t help but pronounce as “Blew-ski” and which I understand is run by Jack Dorsey, the Nazi piece of shit who sold Twitter to Elmo. If anything seems like a Coke and Pepsi situation, it’s Twitter and Blewski.
I has a mastodon but who knows what we’re supposed to do with that? It seems like a bunker for awaiting the Twitter apocalypse.
So, I dunno. Write back I guess and tell me what I should be doing with Notes, “go to” it as Substack advises, have fun and hope I see you around. Thanks!
OK, commence boilerplate:
Notes is a new space on Substack for us to share links, short posts, quotes, photos, and more. I plan to use it for things that don’t fit in the newsletter, like work-in-progress or quick questions.
How to join
Head to substack.com/notes or find the “Notes” tab in the Substack app. As a subscriber to Roy Edroso Breaks It Down, you’ll automatically see my notes. Feel free to like, reply, or share them around!
You can also share notes of your own. I hope this becomes a space where every reader of Roy Edroso Breaks It Down can share thoughts, ideas, and interesting quotes from the things we're reading on Substack and beyond.
Why Substack Notes
Fellow writers and readers are spending time in Notes for a variety of reasons.
Ted Gioia sees Notes as a forum for dialogue.
The idea behind Notes is simple. Millions of people now participate in Substack as writers and readers—but much of this is built on long articles and essays. We now have a forum for dialoguing and sharing shorter posts.
Chris Ryan is drawn to Substack as an alternative for legacy social media.
One of my main reasons for joining Substack was to wean myself off exploitative social media platforms. I’m hoping this is going to help move us along on that journey!
Sherman Alexie wants to create a kind and creative new space in Notes.
I’m going to focus on being positive, with my own thoughts and photos and by linking to songs, stories, poems from around the web and from other Substacks.
If you encounter any issues, you can always refer to the Notes FAQ for assistance. Looking forward to seeing you there!
I'm too old to learn new things. There is no room left in my brain for anything else.
For everything that goes in one ear something else runs out the other. I'm liable to learn all about this new fangled notes thing and forget how to get home from work.
Over the past 5 years, I've stopped using Facebook, disengaged with Twitter, and gradually lost interest in Instagram, which switched from photo app to dollar store TikTok. I've tried Mastodon, but it never grabbed me (mostly because no one is on there, I guess). The one nice thing about this new Sub-twitter is that it has a bunch of high quality writers and puts them in one spot to Sub-tweet. Sure, Bluesky may have the reporters desperate for attention, the A-list celebrities and people posting nudes, but Substack has people I like, so even without the nudes, I'll give it an honest effort to enjoy. So what I'm asking, Roy, is for you to devote time and energy to one more thing. No rest or relaxation for you, sir.
