Condolences to our Maestro for having to exposed himself to any pundit let alone these two in order to craft today's post. If there are even five (but no more than ten) pundits worth shit, it's certainly not these two. 🤮
Staying on brand, I agree with everything said here except I find it somewhat too hopeful. I don't see the necessary sea change coming and if it does, if we get New Deal 2.0, it's not a couple electoral cycles away but at least a generation or two away. Other than the excess of hope, a great piece.
It's funny. I read Hamilton Nolan's post covering this same shindig, (pretty good, not as funny but some intersting insights) before this, and thought at the end of it "huh, the Centrists want to be/are Rockefeller Republicans, the leaders of a constituency that may have one existed, but is dead, Jim". As usual, Roy and satire cut to the chase in a fraction of the time.
I read some of what Roy linked to, and you may be giving them too much credit with "wannabe Rockefeller Republicans." What I'm seeing is people who are purely driven by their hatred of people like me. Sorta like Trump voters, when you think about it.
I don't think they could tell you clearly what they want, but they know what they DON'T want, and I'm it.
This is a discussion they need to have with their Republican buddies. But they won't because anyone claiming to be a "Rockefeller Republican" would be instantly primaried by Ultra-MAGA.
So they're going to build a well-funded and well-publicized sabotage campaign all to say "We hate n*****s and b*****s."
Well, that's the fucking problem - we have a whole lot of people who know what they DON'T want, but a lack of folks willing/able/interested in what they DO want, in articulating a better idea of the future.
Not wannabe, they flat-out are. Their natural home would have been the Republican Party, but that was then. The only difference I see between them and never-Trumpers is the never-Trumpers want to go back to their home.
Nolan said it plain, they want to win, and after winning they want to support their benefactors. They hate people like us because they need to take over the Democratic party, or at least render their liberal opponents irrelevant, and we are trying to drag the Democratic party toward positions that their benefactors really hate. This is that Democratic party power struggle I go on about. Centrists have mountains of polls that they believe prove that the Great Wad of American voters want a common-sense candidate that focuses on their needs and concerns, which don't include any of that radical shit like Medicare to All, Defund the Police, and criticizing "weird" Republicans. This is not what those polls are measuring, but they don't care, they need those polls to say that because that's the foundation of the whole scam.
It must frustrate them, if you're a Republican you can have all the billionaire's money and the support of a genuine popular base of voters (stupid voters, yes, but voters all the same.) If you're a Democrat, seems you gotta choose one or the other. You can have a whopping big check from the Bloomberg for President campaign, or you can work for an actual winning candidate, but not both. No fair! Naturally, they chose the money. The check cashed just fine, even though the campaign sank without a trace.
I, for one, have no problem believing Mike Bloomberg is some kind of monster. I was hoping that somehow, Matt Iglesias might get his head bitten off or something.
We all know the trouble with these guys, but I'll say it anyway. First, when your morals-free identity is as A Centrist Pundit, then when the Overton window moves, you move with it so you remain squarely in the center. In our current times, that means you become so Center-Right the "center" part no longer really applies.
Second, and this is the colossal failing of most Democrats and virtually all Democratic political consultants, EFFECTIVE POLITICIANS DON'T SIMPLY FOLLOW PUBLIC OPINION, THEY REALIZE THEIR JOB IS TO SHAPE IT. Jeez.
I think Roy catches the Fundamental Animating Principle which is their white-hot hatred for anyone who ever walked a picket line, held a sign (worse if they made the sign themselves) or chanted a chant (OK, I kinda get that last part, if it's "Hey Hey Ho Ho"). SO try-hard.
Last Friday, I drove my Nissan Leaf to a picket for the Meriter Hospital nurses, who were on strike (they've since settled, with a pretty decent contract, it looks like.) While there, I joined in "Get up! Get down! Madison's a UNION TOWN!" and then we all sang Solidarity Forever. I got the Centrist Democrat Hate-O-Meter pegged yet?
Could we FDR our way out of this? Another Great Depression could save us, perhaps. (Not WW III, not with nukes.) Immiseration could stir the stupids to want something better than Griftopia but who knows? We experimented with diversity, equality and justice and the stupids fought back and won. It’s not stressed enough: a country that wouldn’t elect Hillary Clinton or Kamala Harris over Donald Trump is a country, as we say in the med biz, TSTL - too stupid to live.
We all use shorthand, almost code, about these things - history, policies, what's for dinner. Beyond media and social media cramping us into these soundbites of expression and our short attention spans, our thinking seems to be likewise molded into neat packages of concept.
I have been browsing Eisenhower's Crusade in Europe and watching parts of WWII and WWI flicks (e.g., All Quiet on the Western Front). Also, thinking about FDR, what little I know.
Nothing from the 1930s really applies now in terms of policy. The problems are different but more important, the resources are vastly different. The geopolitical situation and attitudes can be different if we don't slip back into Kissinger's ghost or a resurrected nationalism in every region.
One perhaps oblique example historically is the Arab Spring. Where did that come from? No one in politics saw it coming. Those boring kids storming the stage, the fruit vendor lighting himself on fire, comments on Substack posts, no one focuses on something that hasn't happened, expressed in a new, surprising way, leading to something different and unexpected.
Not always good at first but happening regardless of our desires and previous paradigms.
That the resources are vastly different is precisely why we are here now. The Grifto Supremos know exactly where the bigbucks/cryptocrapto is, and they want it. All of it. That the BigBadGummint is in the way is just the inconsequential piffle they are hand-waving their way past.
Maybe it isn't that they think the government is in the way so much as they've realized the fact of state monopoly on violence is a REALLY NEAT IDEA to make sure that wealth continues to flow upwards.
I wouldn't say nothing applies from the 30s. Every history I've read on the Great Depression says FDR's "plan" was to throw everything anyone around him could think of against the wall to see what might stick. Some of it got knocked down by the Supreme Court (it's deja vu all over again), some sank without a trace, but some of it worked enough to keep us going until WW2 changed all the rules.
And yeah, some sort of uprising in the US could be some kind of catalyst, but the history of Occupy shows it's harder than the Arab Spring might suggest, for a lot of reasons. I've done my hobbyhorse rant on what happens next too many times, so I'll just say my money is on a big, ugly Event. There's a factoid in my head that in 1929 about half of Amercans lived on a working farm. If true, the implications for modern America in a big ugly Event are not good. This is basically the plot of The Turner Diaries, except the only guarantee is that things don't play out the way those guys think it would.
Reminder that not even FDR could get the New Deal through Congress without concessions to conservative, racist Southern Democrats that would not jeopardize their local power. (An example: Spouse's stepmom was never eligible for Social Security because she was a domestic.)
The Abundance hokum should’ve been a Little Golden Book titled “Neoliberalism,” featuring an anthropomorphic stack of $100 bills with googly-eyes and spats as the main character.
Get the off-colors at a significant discount. Then when you flanneur your way around town, everyone will point at you, saying "Oh, YOOOUUU got the Toasted Hickory BROWWWNNN. [snicker]".
Then you can chuckle back "Yes, and I also got the Light Olive Green and STILL came out ahead!"
After which you can wander off accompanied by peals of laughter fading in the distance...
I clicked on the sport coat and Bloomingdales website informed me that the item was "popular" because 15 other people were looking at it too. What a shock to realize they were all us.
OT, yet what could be more apropos than this example of a careerist brought down by groveling to fascists?
It was easy to predict Santa J. Ono's heel turn was doomed, just by his believing he could pull it off in the first place. But he'd already quit the U Mich presidency, and reports were that Commissar Rufo was not pleased by U Florida's offer.
Rufo thinks of himself as a Master Puppeteer (when he's not sniping from the clock tower). Of course his choices fail. His job is to dismantle public education By Any Means Necessary. Never mind the collateral damage.
I long for the day when I don't have to hear the words "Rufo", "Musk", or "Vance" again, though if it diminishes to a mere 50 times a day I'll take that (esp. if there are jail sentence lengths connected to those names).
I'd lost track of how this was going, thanks for the good news! People like this guy, I'll just never understand. "Respected scientific researcher with his own lab" is the best damn job in the world, once you've reached it why grovel to get something much less fun and rewarding? Is it really just the money? Because it's not like this guy was ever at risk of missing a mortgage payment. Lessee... you can make probably $250k a year as a tenured scientist, or ONE MILLION DOLLARS a year as a University President. Is the extra $750k worth all the trouble? What can you buy with it that you can't already buy?
As a U-M retiree, I'd very much been following it. One thing I saw was a quote, maybe from The Chronicle of Higher Ed., that Florida was to be his fourth presidency, and "Ono is one of the few presidents today who is a professional president." Funny, but sadly true of University, Inc.
The reddit threads were fun. "Imagine being named the sole finalist and fucking it up. U of M deserves better and this is coming from an MSU fan."
And the previous U-M presidency ended in the guy's firing over use of his official email account to conduct his improper relationship with a university employee. I've sort of got the feeling that nowadays, the actual, truthful answer to almost any question to almost anybody in or adjacent to the federal govt. -- in both parties, mind you -- is actually "How should I know?"

I liked that too and I consider myself much more of a Pollyanna than you.
Actually, on the descriptive level, I agree completely with it. Nixon lost me (obviously) on the prescriptive.
"YGLESIAS: [Reading over BARRO’s shoulder] “Expect us.”
BARRO: [Referring to the card] Is that a drawing of Nelson Rockefeller?"
So, I guess Roy is predicting a second coming of Rockefeller . . .
. . . when the first coming is what killed him?
Ba-dum!

Arab Spring started because of food shortages, IIRC
might be getting started on that Great Depression thing, what with the quarter-million new unemployment claims last week
People can still claim unemployment? Something musta gone wrong somewhere! Get me Big Balls...
You can *claim* it. Doesn't mean you'll *get* it.
Right, not like claiming a tax exemption for your private jet.
