When Rent opened on Broadway in 1996, I was living in the actual Lower East Side, as I had done for years, and was very suspicious of the whole idea of a Broadway musical about squatters based on La Boheme. I hadn’t squatted, but I knew people who did. I had even played benefits for their legal defense. I thought they had guts but I didn’t think of them…
