Well, if it comes to pass, thank yer stars that Hans Laube's crowning achievement Smell-o-Vision failed in the market of ideas.

You guys are probably tired of my pointing this out, but real-life conservatives are the living embodiment of the Matt Bors’ Nazi cartoon. It’s all our fault, *WE* were the ones who taught them the “groomer” slur would be effective because (checks notes) we quoted them accurately.

My big hope with this “groomer” bullshit, as well as with the actual Don’t Say Gay laws and the other laws being passed in some states that overtly outlaw abortion, is that the Right, in its rage-fueled insanity, will overreach. They tend to get high on their own supply and barrel forward thinking a majority of people agree with them. But although normies can be swayed by a well-crafted if dishonest message, most people do NOT in fact agree with them and when conservatives overreach the normies sharply draw back in disgust.

Also, when you fuck with Disney….well. Don’t mess with the Mouse, he’s a stone cold capitalist and will kill you before he’ll willingly lose a dollar.

I think in nine months or so when people realize if someone doesn't do a lot of work at those school board positions things go to shit pretty quickly. I doubt if your basic "no gay no gay " grifter has any kind of work ethic beyond relentless self promotion.

When the bus don't pick L'il Jared up for the third time in a month and Noreen has to stay home again and  gets her second and last  written warning down at the call center hopefully shit gets a little more real for the Common Clay. Else Jared ends up spending the day with MeeMaw who keeps nodding off with a lit cigarette in hand during Maury , which is ok because young Jared responded pretty well for a six year old  to the fire safety lecture ( first call 911 and then point the fire extinguisher  at MeeMaw and squeeze the trigger.)The only other choice is her second husband' s half brother Marc, who never seems to have a job or even much leaves the trailer. (Let the Grooming begin!) Best all around if the school board does it's job and the bus shows up.

When you have to turn the knob all the way up to "Pedo" just to get a reaction, it's a sign the machine is breaking down.

My sunny, optimistic view is that we're seeing this pedo-panic stuff now because of the failure of "Socialist" to scare up enough votes in 2020. And that was a VERY good thing.

Expand full comment

And "Socialist" was such an effective slur for decades, it made many a liberal politician cower in fear. All it took was ONE candidate with the guts to say, "Hell yeah, I'm a Socialist, and here's what that means..." and the whole thing collapsed like a house of cards.

Expand full comment

What I've heard is the "pedo" label was very effective in helping sway public opinion towards Putin -- drumming up anti-queer hysteria as a way to discredit political opponents. It seems to have worked there...

Expand full comment

Overreaching is essentially impossible. They spew this unhinged shit to solidify the base to elect the tools of their contributors, the Powers That Be. And as long as the tools do their jobs, the PTB don’t care what they say to the little people. Sorry.

Going forward, energy really needs to focused on the local level. The federal level will be lost soon, ditto many states.

Expand full comment

Trumpism itself was an over-reach, in that they lost the House and then the Senate and the Presidency. Enough voters saw what Trumpism was, decided they didn't want it, and turned the country in a very different direction. Which is what happens when you over-reach.

Expand full comment

Overreach is always a danger when you confine yourself in an information bubble. We're seeing a pretty horrific example of that in Putin's decision to invade Ukraine.

Expand full comment

We're not out of the woods here with that -- with plenty of voters seeing what it all meant & still voting pro.

I agree that all thisn anti-queer, anti-trans, anti-abortion legislation might a desperate last attempt to stay relevant, but we are not going to know that until after 2024, maybe later.

It was clear you didn't get my joke -- so possibly recheck what it might mean in that context.

Focusing on the local level for once is vital, but we're way behind everywhere due to boomer liberal complacency. Losing any of those levels is not an option these days...

Completely missed it.

I’ve also been hung up on the idea of whether the label “liberal” actually had any meaning or was just a sloppy application or misuse of the word.

Too, I’m not sure maximum blame goes to the boomers, spoiled by the Greatest Generation and the post-WWII prosperity for which the GG deserves no credit or the Boomers’ kids who chose to believe that materialism was the only thing that matters. I mean, blame has to move with time. Doing nothing while waiting for the aged to act is a little silly.

Whilst awaiting the second coming, so to speak, of Alex Cockburn's Press Clips, Boehlert was as good as one could get. Possibly -- probably? -- due to his nature as a human being, he was, for my taste, insufficiently cynical and for, whatever reason, wouldn't make the connection that the mainstream repeatedly, continually failed out of profit-oriented choice which is to say something of a moral failing. Reporters are presumed to be honest but what you can call Big Journalism's profit model was to spew bullshit which is to say they lie as part of the job. Of course, I, a non-professional, can of course be wrong on this but the pieces fit well.

As for Erick, Son of Erick and a 4H-winning sow -- he has his mother's face, no?? -- again: as a practical matter, there's no truly decent Republican and too few conservatives (or no meaningful influence) to matter. So, sure: sliming Boehlert. They roll on gratuitous hate if no other reason because that's what their audiences want. Which is to say my hate for them and what they do is a response to their acts, something of a normal reaction. Awful garbage for decades now. And they don't let up, they don't get better.

"...because Erickson is a stinking piece of shit." Which is to say he's no outlier there.

Expand full comment

MJT is a piece of shit, but at least she's (probably) mentally ill. Erickson is just a straight forward piece of shit.

Boehlert was a good follow on Twitter, and he wrote one of my favorite obituaries of Al Weisel (Jonathan Swift) for Media Matters when Weisel passed 12 years ago. I'm glad we had both of them, even if it wasn't long enough.

Expand full comment

This was excellent. Erickson's been a stinking piece of shit for so long.

I read his post on Herschel Walker after this one and it had this line: "Remember, 427,205 Republicans stayed home in January 2021 because they thought the race was going to be stolen."

Curious where he got such a specific number, I did a Google search and got a handful of hits. Surprise, all from Erick Erickson, who's been repeating it often, and a few more where he was quoted -- always with the bit about how they stayed home because they believed it was going to be stolen. Thing is, if you add up all the Republican votes in the General election for Senator in Georgia, and subtract the Republican vote in the Runoff, you get less than half Erickson's number. (Same if you subtract it from Trump's tally.) On top of that, Democrats saw an almost identical drop in turnout from the General to the Runoff, and I doubt it was because they thought the race was going to be stolen by Democrats. I'm beginning to suspect he pulled the number out of his nether bifurcation. You can never, ever, trust them when it comes to data of any kind.

Expand full comment

Thanks, as a math teacher I always love seeing math used for real-world practical stuff, but I do want to point out that your debunking of Erickson's number took about a hundred times as much work as Erickson put into pulling it out of his ass in the first place. Kind of a built-in advantage for their team but I don't want to discourage your efforts.
