I'm reasonably convinced that the NYT's piece on Hope Hicks is the signal artifact showing the United States is officially dead. When we have reached a point where whether or not to comply with black-letter law has become a philosophical question--a personal option instead of an enforceable obligation--then we are no longer a nation united by anything.

Krugman wrote years ago about how self-styled objectivity in journalism would lead to headlines such as "Shape of Earth: Views Differ." He underestimated just how shitty journalism would become in so short a time.

So far as I can tell, the N.Y.T. has been pulling these stunts for decades. My first web influence, Bartcop, used to rage about it's subservience to the Bush GOP and Driftglass gives the old grey lady even shorter shrift for the Sulzburger wingnut welfare hires and non-stop Brooksian garbage 'philosophy'. Maybe if they had a Judith Miller banner photo...?

Compliance with legal instruments strictly a matter for presidential compliance or not? Trump is now really deep into his delusions of imperial power and grandeur. But seriously, Congress has to hold all these people in contempt of Congress and send federal marshals in to arrest all of them starting with Barr and definitely including Hicks if she continues her diffident pose. Trump will, of course, rant and rave hysterically but what is he going to do:try to send the troops to surround the Capitol Building? Pretty sure, commanders will disobey such an illegal order.

Ms. Hicks, little seen out and about recently, has been binge-watching The Good Place, in hopes that Chidi Anagonye will provide the answer to her existential dilemma. (She tried reading Sartre but found him "too dense and a downer.")
