Very well said. Someone said on twitter, and it *immediately* rang completely true, the white guys who are Trump’s most ardent supporters (rally attendees, truck and boat parades, etc.) are the same guys who believe the best time of their lives was being a bully in high school. I mean think about it – that Venn diagram is probably almost a single circle.

And the MAGAts have subsisted so exclusively on a diet of Own The Libs for four years, now when they see us happy they think it means we are de facto mocking them. And when we *DO* mock them, they’re mad because we’re so much funnier than they are. We can’t win … EXCEPT WE JUST DID, LOL!

My thinking is that Trump will flee the country with as much money as he can scrounge rather than risk the humiliation of being subject to court trials and prison; and that slinking back to Florida in defeat would feel nearly as unbearable to him. And I think it is actually better for the country that he do so: better to let him become a disgraced and impotent memory to his people than be martyred by vengeful liberals who have better things to do (like repair the country).

If Gore Vidal writes our future, I foresee Trump causing us problems by getting himself proclaimed President of Azerbaijan. Maybe Junior challenges Hunter to a duel. Ivanka evades prosecution by living at sea on a retired Soviet aircraft carrier, and becomes queen of a libertarian seasteader nation -- well, maybe that last bit is more Neal Stephenson.

Something occurred to me last night while I was chatting with my youngest brother: George H W Bush. Who ever says his name anymore? He was the one GOP president of the past 40 years with anything resembling competence or awareness. He was also a one-term president. A loser. A sucker. A chump.

The GOP's Will to Power cannot abide losers & suckers & chumps. The swampy storm of cognitive dissonance within that side's hearts (spits) must be mighty at this stage. They knew he was a scumbag & a grifter & a cheat -- but they imagined him as a winner.

Winning has been thoroughly repudiated at this stage. Even Fox's more mainstream personae know this. Trump (probably) will prove to be a one-term president. At least as long as his lawyers continue to file such wretchedly transparent garbage lawsuits.

A loser. Like Poppy Bush. Remember him?

Listen, if he'd managed to actually pull off the assassination of Reagan, I might have voted for him for a second term. But he fucked it up. Who the hell lets Judy Woodruff screw up that kind of high level plot?

Here in Reddestneckistan the anger and confusion are strong..

ABC just announced tRump taking the show back on the road, with more rallies..

And in GA, loathsome turd, Rep. Rev.(Assoc. Pastor of the Chicopee Baptist) Doug Collins will be the GOP’s representative in the GA Recount..

Collins lost to the appalling harridan Kelly Loeffler..

He routinely speaks to militia/patriot groups with eliminationist language.

I hate that guy(my former congressman) as much as I hate my new one in NC Madison Cawthorn.

I’d like J Madison to do a ghostly visitation on him..

OBL was the black sheep of the family not because he was a terrorist -- there's the rumors about Saudi, mmm, complicity in 9/11 -- but because the rest of the family was tight with the House of Sand. So OBL's niece is a Trumpie makes perfect sense.

In my relatively limited experience with the GOP base, they're envious (of something of a fantasy), resentful, angry at their entitlement being disrespected. A piece of shit, a sociopath like Donnie doesn't need substance, just an attitude and the right spew of shit to satisfy them.

A piece in the Times last week worked as a reminder that one of the great (JK) things in Donnie's tax cut bill is that the cuts for the wealthy are forever, the cuts for the little people have sunset provisions.

And Jane Mayer had a lovely piece in The New Yorker last week about Donnie's possible futures. Presumption is that SCOTUS won't give Donnie the win. One of things she discusses is the possibility (or likelihood?) of a pardon for the Don. But LOL; Dunno that the kids can get pardon or at least to the extent that state officials can't touch them.

And speaking of the corporate media, the Times is surely sending a message: Said Donnie lied using the L word the other day, and the headline the other day -- Biden Beats Trump. Beats is a brutal word by the Times' standards. (Maybe Biden Trumps Trump would have been more elegant?) So it seems the Powers That Be are through with Donnie -- he can't do enough good for them now that's worth keeping him around -- but the party leaders, such as it is, aren't there yet.

BTW: If acknowledging the reality on the ground is a reference to the peace treaties with Israel, well, it's a tell how bogus they are. Not a single signatory ever went to war with Israel or was any legitimate military threat to Israel. As for all the business opportunities, I dunno. And if the reference is to stepping back from fucking around in Syria and Iraq, eh, I do't know that the retreats, as it were, are all that significant. And re: troop reduction in Germany and Afghanistan: The former was limited and, well, we're still making a mess in Afghanistan. One might say that he was allowed to do what he wanted with national security matters as long as it was minor and insignificant. And then there's the North Korea debacle.

But props to the painted turd for helping to show how fucked up the nation is. Can't fix a big problem without understanding it. So thanks to Donnie for that.

My 2024 marker is on Lindsay. He’s got the spittle-flecked angry white guy act down cold, and is way better at it than guys like Hawley or Cotton, perhaps because he’s been acting his whole life for...other reasons. Plus in private he can turn on the charm for the press, we know this from the last go-round. He’s already positioning himself for the run imo. But we’ll see.

I agree. Graham has neither spine nor feck, most recently evidenced by his support for the Orange Clown's stolen election charade. He always reminds me of TV Lassie's young master Timmy, especially since he still oddly looks like a tweeny Jon Provost. In my version, Lindsey/Timmy and Lassie don't so much save the baby down the well as they are responsible for putting it there.

I can see the Trumpier Trumpists all trumping each other out trying to be Trump and Mr Graham left standing. I'd in fact welcome that, since a good chunk of the Trumping-at-the-bit bitches are such that they won't vote for him because he's named 'Lindsay' and even some of the ones not as down on gays still 'hate f-gs',—sometimes he acts as if he reads.

Trump and his crew of crackheads are planning on fight-fight-fighting the election through the courts, no matter how stupid that fight might seem. But as important, Trump is planning on doing rallies around the country. He will be reading the obituaries of people who died but supposedly voted, thus "proving" the massive fraud that has illegally denied him victory.

My guess is that Trump will continue to hold rallies for the foreseeable future. Those rallies are great fundraising vehicles and his supporters buy up all the Trump crap for sale, pay for tickets, and then hand over "support" checks. Rallies also provide Trump with the constant flow of adulation across his gills that he needs to survive. And rallies also allow him to incite his followers.

He, and they, will eventually fade. Would that he finds himself reduced to addressing the ballroom in the Minot Holiday Inn Express! But until then, he will be a pebble in America's shoe and a threat to democracy.

I wish I were sanguine, but there is merit in the idea that now people don't have to fear him, they'll stop taking his IOUs. And with COVID restrictions likely to multiply, there is a strong public heath argument against holding planned gatherings without limitation (not holding my breath on the last one tho).

This is the reason we've got to prosecute all the actual crimes. And by we, I guess I mean SDNY. And by prosecute I mean imprison and impoverish. The Patrick Bateman son and the social climby daughter will seem a lot less appealing as 2024 candidates if the banks are ripping up the carpet and carrying out the chairs from every Trump property. And the bossman himself will face an impossible choice: Either shut up about the ongoing court cases, or what you say at the rally will be used against you in the proceedings.

If it's in SDNY, it can be pardoned. Now, in state courts, it would be another matter.

In “Race and Reunion” David Blight showed how the urge to reconcile with Confederates led to acceptance of Jim Crow and the abandonment of Blacks who needed Federal support in their quest for equality. This country was unable to excise the racism and hate that produced the Civil War, in fact it welcomed it back into the Union. I hope Biden knows this, or if not, someone (Harris?) fills him in. This knowledge should dictate how he moves the government to support the victims of American bigotry and hatred, not succor the bigots and haters who put Trump and all the other Republican assholes in office.

Expand full comment

I'm really hoping Harris will talk him out of some of his more useless urges to compromise. Considering the unfair heavy lift it is for democrats to win a presidency even without the voter suppression, they have a mandate. They have an overwhelming mandate, seven million plus votes? They need to act like it.

Expand full comment

Not to mention, dithering while pursuing a mirage of compromise helps no one and cripples you at the polls in the next election. I think the deplorables first got their opening to be non-logical intransigent opposeniks and haters when Frank Luntz's language guide was so eagerly utilized by Newt Gingrich (who could have been a political role model for Drumpf, so corrupt and immoral was he).

And so, cognitive dissonance now being their state-of-mind preference, a Tucker Carlson/ Noor bin Ladin ticket could be just the fit for the neo Gopers.

THe GOP will continue to descend into a party of two parts: Reaganite, right wing oligarchs and ideologues on the one hand and a surging QAnon paranoid, conspiracy drenched wing. This will cripple the party's ability to fashion a coherent and appealing message to the majority of voters and continue to make the GOP a rural, regional party.

“a rural, regional party” indifferent to the wishes of the majority of voters owing to its baked-in structural advantage under the Constitution. Half the country’s voters have proclaimed themselves feral.

A zillion heart-clicks! As a benign narcissist in training, and since I've been saying these things for years, I'm naturally in complete agreement! Many New Yorkers pegged Trump as a scumbag at first sight, which made it all the more insane to watch him attract "admirers" like so many flies to shit. Trump's schtick is rooted in the practice initiated by Newt Gingrich, Limbaugh, and the Murdoch empire of using the most inflammatory language possible to demonize the enemy, and not even so much lying as just saying ANYTHING; this was Trump's training ground -- no policies or thought, just lunatic opinion. (Remember Gingrich's "Language, a Key Mechanism of Control"?) So when Trump prattles on with something like "Biden will destroy your suburbs, set America on fire, take away Christmas, close your favorite churches and chain restaurants, make your laundry smell..." he's just covering the microphone in slime that doesn't even have to make sense. It's why Newt is still such a big fan.
