Hear, hear. Some of the best comedy right now is being supplied by conservatives, because their complete inability to land a real punch on either Biden or his popular policies has them thrashing around in frustration trying to find a target, any target. Genderless plastic potatoes will make your kids want to transition, Major is a very bad dog and should be euthanized, the Marines let girls in so the Marines are a bunch of sissies. But to me the absolute funniest thing is conservatives’ knee-jerk anti-Biden contrarianism, where his most anodyne remarks and actions turn them into toddlers who have skipped their naps.

Biden: it’s Monday.

Conservatives: Oooh, look at this tyrant, he thinks he can dictate to patriots what day of the week it is! What about my freedom of speech to say it’s Tuesday, huh? What about the right of conservatives to print our OWN calendars without being canceled by elite libtards? Here’s MY calendar, and it says today is Tuesday! Come and take it, bitch!

the most disappointing thing about the last graph is that you know there are a lot of cons out there thinking this very way. maybe cons is short from contrarians.

Expand full comment

Being contrarian is not a systematic political theory, it's a tantrum.

Yes it is

The problem for conservatives is they can't find a narrative to attack Biden. Bill Clinton had a shady private life; Obama was a black man with a funny name; Hillary Clinton is an intelligent woman and does not apologize for it. Biden is a boring old white man. Hence, "cancel culture" drivel, culture war bullshit, and unfathomable phony outrage.

I think what we are seeing is what Trumpism after Trump really is. None of these people can do the thing he does. Donny’s great talent is just to be himself, as hideous and obnoxious as possible. Everyone else is just an imitator, and cannot hold a candle to the master.

I've heard that they even got some of that wrong: Mr . [sic] and Mrs. [sic] Potato Head are still being sold, just the _brand-name_ has been changed.

Instead of working about packaging, the bros should be fighting for the Potato Heads to be completed and provided with genitals.

Well, now, given that our armed forces are in fact breeding and train grounds for right wing extremists and heretical Xians -- oops, I mean evangelicals -- I full support the wing nuts essentially shitting on their own.

I mean, woke policing. Sure.

But you know, the fuckers are still unhinged and still living in their America fanfic. Any pandering will do for the GOP base (the part not supporting the GOP because they have an actual financial interest). And they'll follow their marching orders no matter how insane they appear to the less deluded, fantasizing, detached from reality...

Expand full comment

It’s amazing the extent to which the GOP has become the He-Man Woman Haters Club. Not that misogyny hasn’t been part of the right’s appeal for a long time, but I’m fully expecting calls for the repeal of the 19th Amendment to be a mainstream Republican position in another election cycle or two.

I hadn’t heard about the Marines forced to apologize for kicking Tucker in his balls. Sounds like some Marine brass need to be relocated to brown snake removal on Guam.

TED CRUUUUUZZZ said he’s demanded a meeting with the commander of the Marine Corps to get to the bottom of why they were so mean to Tucker. I’m sure that’s going to accomplish something.

I wonder how far away they are from proposing that. I see no shortage of comments about how Obama, teh gheys, women, and millennials ruined the military. Wingnut mentality is so reactionary at this point that if one of them proposed a military for red staters only, they would be thrilled. It owns the libs! That is their total platform.

The killer hack of Trump was to get them all to a point where they could say big government is fine as long as it is for the good people who deserve it.

By "oligarchs" I mean international corporations & things that actually exist, not anti-Semitic spectres.

[This was perhaps Marx biggest failing: invoking anti-semitic tropes to metaphorize the class war. It's been revealed he was anti-semitic at heart, and too many supporters have replayed the line without thinking it through.]

I'm old and slow but I can't remember any military action that involved actual national security, that is, national security more than just destabilizing foreign states to make the world safe for western capitalism since Wall Street's takeover those kind of things, if not the nation, in the late 40s. I'm sure there are exceptions but that's the rule.

As usual a fantastic piece, although I think I'd put it another way. To me it's not so much about psychological comfort as about maintaining power and relevance. In other words, I'd say the Right isn't thinking "they look down on me" as much as "holy crap less and less people are willing to buy my schtick." But because their minds and the minds of their followers are so narrow, they can only go one direction. As a result, anyone that poses a threat to them has to be labeled with the label of the day ("woke," "cancel culture").

That said, there's not much difference. If you're trying to maintain your power and relevance, you're also trying to comfort yourself into believing you still have power and relevance.

In the long multi-millennia history of radical movements led by the usual middle-to-upper-class twits, the "pick a random fight with the Empire's military" stage is usually at the tail end of the movement.

Either they win the whole pile and take over or the military ends up removing the second-in-command guy so many times no one wants to be in the movement anymore.

Over and over, it is the perceived loss of privilege driving them insane. As a white boomer, I watched the Grammys last night wondering what my parents would possibly make of it. I think they would have been more stunned than shocked, unable to process it at all. For me, it was a perfect display of every fear these people have, cancel culture writ large, on CBS of all networks.
