In TrumpWorld it's black and white -- either you are fucking (winning) or you are being fucked (losing). There is nothing in-between, no gray. His entire existence, and now ours, is a grift. If you aren't a winner, you are a loser. It's not a sustainable existence, of course, but he's always been able switch the grift or to use bankruptcy to hit reset. He'll ride into the sunset with his weird hair blowing in the wind after this, we won't have that option.
At times like this, I try to remember Nathan Mathis, the old Alabama guy whose lesbian daughter, Patti Sue, killed herself. He's the guy who missed his daughter so much, and bitterly regretted his own ignorance, and made himself a sign telling all his neighbors and fellow residents not to vote for that hideous Roy Moore.
I mean, Nathan Mathis saw through the bullshit, after the most painful event of his life, and he didn't shut up about it. Seeded throughout Trumpworld there are other Nathan Mathises, and I can't go out and find them - they have to step up on their own - but I hope. Part of me hopes.
My stepfather gave me a hardbound double volume set of the original Solzhenitsyn Gulag Archipelago. My husband has read at least half of it and says "there are a lot of footnotes, if you like that kind of thing." I don't think I will ever read it. Maybe I'll read the Cancer Ward or something less depressing like that.
I read the Solzhenitsyn when it came out in the West. The idea I had then that my country would never do something like that took much of the sting out of it, at the time.
Is there nothing we can do to incentivize being an elite? I mean, sure, the much higher pay looks good, and the longer life expectancy, but that's it! Oh and the vastly wider array of options available for entertainment and food, and the amazing experiences of travel around the country and the world, and the living a genuinely constructive existence potentially adding to the total of human knowledge as a scientist or artist -- but what else? Nothing! Well, there's dressing nicely, maybe, if you want to look occasionally good, or at least have a classy nontattered pair of sweats to sit around the house in, which additionally won't end up on the TV show Hoarders. Plus I guess the not living 100 miles from the only health clinic that can treat your chronic back pain that you got because the factory where you work banned the unions that would have protected you from lifting the stuff your boss said to -- and the not eating opioids by the handful -- I dunno. And the acceptance of more people and creeds and therefore the less paranoid, much happier outlook at all times . . . and the seeing your grandkids live in a world not superheated by climate change, where they can get decent jobs and live enjoyable lives like you did . . . Heck, I give up. Trump supporters are right to eschew elitism. It offers nothing.
Trump's knowledge of worldwide pharmaceutical research, intellectual patents and drug pricing is equalled only by his knowledge of economics, climate change, nuclear weapon treaties, the Constitution, moral philosophy and basic syntax.
Trump thinks virtually all of the drugs in the world are made by American pharmaceutical companies. This is completely absurd as there are many leading pharmaceutical companies that are British, German, Swiss, French and others. My brain hurts every time Trump opens his shit-filled mouth.
Best weekend for you too Roy, and thanks.
We can make Mexico pay for the wall and we can make the countries with socialized medicine pay for pharmaceutical R&D.
While they're at it they can pay to cover Americans' pre-existing conditions. Easy common sense solutions.

Too early to start drinking?
It's never too early to start drinking.

That will be $250.00.
Uhhhhhhh,bill Soros.
The sun's over the yardarm somewhere in the British Empire.

And you have a pleasant weekend too!
I've been reading Varlam Shamalov's Kolyma Tales in preparation for the camps, Roy. I can't recommend the collection of gulag stories highly enough.

Hoo boy. This one is very good. Not too cheery, though!
Evil old Burroughs noted that improving the product were much less easy than degrading the customer.

Wasn't Trums argument basically lifted from a Megan McArdle column put out a few years ago?
