What were these truckers hoping to accomplish? Lots of these guys live day to day. They need to get paid.

Expand full comment

Truckers, or dudes who play truckers on tv? As Roy points out, their media relations operation seems more on point than their knowledge of how commercial transport works in the five boroughs.

Expand full comment

I know next to nothing about the trucking biz, but if you work for some trucking company based in Nebraska, how often do you get a shipment to New York City? Don't you just spend your whole life shuttling between Omaha and Kansas City?

Once again, the Maestro has banged out a piece that takes the breath away.

The initial hurdle for me is this trucker idiocy. After a very modest success in DC -- part of which clearly included making an impression on Roy (sort of how I felt about the tourists crowding Grand Central before retirement) -- and subsequent failures in Toronto, at the site of the Illegal Immigrant Invasion in Texas (itself something of an Edroso Joint® come to life and now this wherein the crackers will be defeated by the GWB -- who in their right mind cares. To quote America's Most Beloved First Lady, when it comes to manly men cosplayers, I really don't care, do u?

But this piece is a gem.

Really, some of these pieces should be collected into, like, quarterly print-on-demand books for sale at Amazon. Roy can become the commie political satirist near-equivalent of Dr Chuck Tingle.

I wonder how the (capitalist) employers of these truckers will be reacting to losing money and customers in the name of supporting Trump?

Expand full comment

If any of this is in any way "real," they will lose their jobs 2 seconds after refusing the route, to be swiftly replaced, and capitalism will roll on, and the residents of Queens will never feel a lapse in the availability of Snickers ice cream bars at their favorite bodegas.

I strongly suspect any trucks we see in any alleged "convoy" driving around while refusing to make deliveries to NYC are either MAGA truckers on their days off, or are truckers who don't deliver to NYC anyway. No more than a handful of imbeciles are going to turn down money because a judge in NYC ruled against Trump.

Expand full comment

You underestimate the number of imbeciles who love Trump.

I see them on TV, hear them on the radio, meet them in real life: They know Trump is an honest man being hounded by partisans for political gain. He's an honest businessman!

He's an honest businessman who has been

Convicted of running a fraudulent university and had to pay tens of millions of dollars AND sign a consent decree that he would never have any business like that again.

Convicted of running a fraudulent charity, and got his entire family barred from being involved in ANY charity. Forever.

Convicted of defrauding banks and other businesses out of tens of millions.

How many times in how many ways in how many states and in how many trials does Trump have to be proven to be a conman before his imbecile followers get it?

Expand full comment

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: what makes this (ludicrous) position plausible to a lot of people is the fact that he has been criming like this for 50+ years and nobody stopped him. Clearly corrupt players and systems in NY have conspired to protect him, and certainly other wealthy NYC real estate types (looking at you, Kushners). Had he been prosecuted for something years ago, the whole world might have been spared a lot of pain.

Expand full comment

Commercial real estate developers in NYC have often made organized crime syndicates look like daycare centers. But from a gangster boss all the way down to a penny-ante conman, most criminals understand rule one is don't draw undue attention to yourself. So ironically enough, if Trump had never ridden down that escalator in 2015 he likely never would have been prosecuted or sued for any of it.

Expand full comment

Decades of criminality just ignored, because it's just so COMPLICATED and DIFFICULT to prosecute people who can afford lawyers, let's just meet our quota by prosecuting subway fare-jumpers.

But no, that's not enough, then let's take the criminal and put him on national TV and lie to everyone about his business acumen and treat him as an object of worship.

Yeah, it took a LOT of work by a lot of really smart and powerful and influential people to create this monster. He couldn't have done it without them. It's a shame that his massive narcissism prevents him from thanking them properly, because I'd like to have a list of names.

Expand full comment

Don't forget he is also an adjudicated rapist who has to pay millions for defaming his victim. For me, that's really the jewel in the crown of his limitless malfeasance.

Yeah, there are plenty of Trump imbeciles. But exactly how much bread and butter cash are they willing to sacrifice? Some will lose money for him, sure. P.T. Barnum understood this type. But most won't, or can't.

We all have the specific example that sets our blood boiling, but for me it's Trump University. Probably because I'm a community-college teacher who sees working-class folks trying to get ahead with some education, and to see those people as easy marks to be robbed and left destitute takes a special kind of monster.

Expand full comment

I once worked at a company that handled correspondence for the US Dept of Ed, and we had to write responses to people pleading for help that they’d taken out student loans for a college that suddenly disappeared with their money and left them on the hook for the loan. These were disproportionately from (at the time) Louisiana “beauty schools,” which seemed odd until I learned that people needed that certification to open a Barber Shop in their neighborhood.

I would like to believe this, but I live adjacent to upstate NY. LOL. It really is. But it's also the mark's resistance to admitting they've been conned. This "movement" is such obvious bullshit that it boggles my mind that anyone would take it seriously. Truckers by and large cannot pick and choose which routes and jobs they will make unless they want to go broke. Owner-operators (independent) truckers are a tiny minority. It's not a nation of B.J. and the Bear out on the roads in their personal vehicles, picking and choosing routes based on what FOX news tells them. As with any issue, you can certainly find some subset of guys who will actually participate (what a word in this case!) in this fauxcott.
